Top High Tech Stocks To Invest In 2014

Many developed equities generally have higher dividend yields than U.S. stocks. For example, the dividend yield on the S&P 500 has remained around a low 2.0% for many years now. However, it is possible to earn much higher yields by investing in companies in other developed markets such as Germany, Australia, Singapore, etc.

In countries such as Singapore or Australia, the dividend culture is deeply-rooted. Companies there return a good chunk of their profits as dividends to shareholders. This is vastly different from the U.S. where most companies retain a major portion of their profits for expanding operations, increasing R&D expenditures, share buybacks, acquisitions, etc. Many decades ago, U.S. investors bought stocks in order to earn a steady income in the form of dividends. However, that expectation changed in the past few decades when investors focused more on capital appreciation than income. As a result, companies are more than happy to hold on to earnings and spend them as they wish. Though corporate profits have soared in the years since the financial crisis and only limited growth opportunities exist, most firms continue to have low payout ratios. Some firms have artificially boosted their earnings and stock prices by implementing share buyback programs. Since short-term mentality drives how U.S. public companies operate on a daily basis and management's compensation is mostly tied to rising stock prices, accounting gimmicks such as share buybacks are unlikely to go away anytime soon.

It has a golf course business that is not profitable but has a lot of assets. And then it has a waste management business that is profitable. But doesn have a lot of assets.

This is the sort of situation where I would pay a lot of attention to the balance sheet. You aren really double counting in a stock like this. The assets are not producing the earnings. They could be separated from the business.

Unfortunately, this is a controlled company. And not a good activist target.

Obviously when looking at things like real estate you don go by what it says on the balance sheet. You try to find a note on depreciation that breaks out land, buildings, etc. And gives information about how the company depreciates its property.

And of course you look at the ropertiesitem in the 10-K. In the U.S., you then use the information youe gathered to check county land records and things like that for more information about the property.

Seth Wenig/APCEO Nick Woodman holds a GoPro camera in his mouth as he celebrates his GoPro's IPO. There were plenty of winners and losers this week, as the leading premium coffeehouse chain expanded its carbonated beverage offerings, and a disruptive video-streaming service got disrupted itself. Here's a rundown of the week's best and worst. GoPro (GPRO) -- Winner The initial public offering market got some fresh meat on Thursday when GoPro went public. The company behind the popular namesake cameras that extreme sports enthusiast like to wear was a hit. It priced at $24 a share -- at the high end of its initial range -- and that still wasn't enough. The stock opened at $28.65, closing out its first day of trading with a 31 percent gain. GoPro's growth has been stellar. Sales soared 87 percent last year to nearly hit $1 billion. However, there was a surprising decline in revenue during this year's first quarter. New GoPro investors are assuming that the most recent quarter's dip was a fluke. If it isn't a fluke, they can record their stumble in glorious high-def. Aereo -- Loser Sometimes it's the disruptor that gets disrupted. Aereo, the start-up service that offers local TV channels as a streaming platform, was pummeled by the U.S. Supreme Court. In a 6-3 decision, the court ruled that Aereo violated the copyrights of major TV networks by streaming their content without paying transmission fees. The move isn't the end for Aereo, but its prognosis has clearly deteriorated. Aereo thought that incorporating tiny remote antennas that subscribers can access online was similar enough to actual HD antenna ownership by individuals that its business model would be found to be legal. That didn't pan out, and consumers are unlikely to get a break this way from their ever-increasing cable and satellite TV bills. As many of our clients know, Jensen focuses primarily on the discounted cash flow (DCF) method to value equities. Our long held belief is that the intrinsic value of a business is the present value of the cash flows the company is expected to pay its shareholders in the future. The remainder of this paper explores some of the advantages and disadvantages of using either DCF or multiples and outlines why we believe DCF is the more fundamentally sound way to value equities.

  • [By David Kerr]

Let take a look at using a version of the Discounted Cash Flow method (DCF) to valuate the share price. I will use the most recent Earnings Per Share of 2.32, an 18.9% growth rate over the next 10 years (which is the average EPS growth rate of the past 10 years), a Terminal Growth Rate of 2% (average inflation rate for 2013 so far), with 10 years of Terminal Growth at a Discount Rate of 12% to be safe. That leaves us with a Fair Value of $58.85 and a 42% Margin of Safety. That a healthy margin.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

The partnership has generated $7.6 billion of distributable cash flow (DCF) over the past nine years, paying out just short of three quarters of that total and reinvesting the rest. The long-term distribution coverage checks in at a prudent 134%.

  • [By GuruFocus]

Free cash flow is a favorite parameter of value investors. It seems to make sense, because the value of a company is determined by how much cash it can generate over time. Value investors have developed discounted cash flow (DCF) models to estimate the value of companies.
