Sometimes better-than-expected earnings per share aren�� enough to push a stock price higher. Just ask Coach (COH).

The luxury handbag-and-accessories retailer fell 7.7% in morning market action to $50 a share, despite beating earnings by a penny. That�� because Coach�fell short on revenue as its core North America markets once again delivered a poor performance.

For the period ended Sept. 28, Coach reported early Tuesday a profit of $217.9 million, or 77 cents a share, down from $221.4 million, or 77 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue decreased nearly 1% to $1.15 billion as currency exchange rates and a drop in North American sales all but erased international sales growth.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters recently expected per-share earnings of 76 cents and revenue of $1.19 billion.

It�� been a rough 2013 for the once fast-rising stock. Coach is undergoing a rash of top executive departures and faces challenges from rivals such as Michael Kors Holdings (KORS), Fifth & Pacific�� (FNP) Kate Spade and Tory Burch.

Brown Over the past decade or so, waves of computer-aided identity theft have washed over the U.S. Since the first big hack attack on ChoicePoint in 2005, through more recent data breaches at Evernote, LivingSocial, and now the massive Target (TGT) breach involving 110 million pieces of data (just the third-largest data breach in U.S. history, by the way), companies have more or less figured out a routine for dealing with data breaches. You notify the FBI. You (eventually) notify your customers. And you replace everybody's credit cards. With the latest breach at Target, that process is already well under way. Megabanks like JP Morgan Chase (JPM), Bank of America (BAC), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Citigroup (C) have collectively handed out millions of new cards, with new card numbers, to customers whose data may have been compromised by the Target data breach. Last week, the Independent Community Bankers of America issued a release confirming its members -- small banks around the country -- have "reissued more than 4 million credit and debit cards." To ensure that credit and debit card numbers that hacker stole from Target and Neiman Marcus will soon be useless, ICBA member bankers absorbed costs in excess of $40 million. And as a result of their quick action, says the group, "community banks' initial fraud costs were relatively low, with less than 1 percent of community bank customers reporting fraud."     Alamy SAN FRANCISCO -- Apple (AAPL) has cut in half the time it takes to give refunds to online store customers who want to return their iPhones and other gadgets, a small but crucial step to try to get more people to buy direct from its website. The move is a big upfront expense on Apple's part, but could pay off in the long run if the company can lure online customers away from retailers such as Amazon.com (AMZN) and Best Buy (BBY), industry experts say. According to retail-intelligence firm StellaService, customers who buy a product from Apple's online store can get a refund in under a week, versus 10 days previously. Apple is processing refunds at a faster rate because the company now uses an expedited service, FedEx 2Day, to let customers ship returned items with prepaid labels to its warehouse in three days. StellaService researchers first noted the improvement in refund processing times in November, but chalked it up to a temporary measure for the busy holiday season. The company, which orders items from Apple's website several times a day for research purposes, also discovered that packages were stamped with FedEx 2Day, rather than a Newgistics prepaid label. A source with knowledge of the new procedure confirmed that customers will incur no additional cost. "This is the first time we're seeing an investment like this on the returns side," Kevon Hills, StellaService's vice president of research, told Reuters. StellaService does business with Amazon-owned Zappos, but declined to disclose whether its customer base included Apple, Amazon or eBay (EBAY). Amazon remains the frontrunner in online retail, but the race is heating up.     Home furnishing company Pier 1 Imports Inc (PIR) announced on Friday that its board of directors has approved a $200 million share buyback program.

    The buyback is effectively immediately. The program allows the repurchase of shares in the open market or through private transactions.

    The Company has also announced that its Board of Directors has elected Cynthia P. McCague, Michael A. Peel, and Ann M. Sardini to the Board of Directors.

    Pier 1 Imports shares were up 45 cents, or 2.22% during premarket trading Friday. The stock has been mostly flat YTD.

    For one thing, I can�� tell a great oil company from a not so great oil company. I can�� evaluate the company�� culture, management, etc. There was no way I was ever going to answer questions like that. But I can easily split Murphy�� U.S. retail business from its other operations. And I can compare that part of the company to other public companies like Pantry (PTRY) and Susser (SUSS). I can also ��this is much harder ��look at Murphy�� reserves and compare them to other oil companies��reserves. The SEC now requires a standardized way of reporting discounted net cash flows for all oil companies. So, there�� certainly a specific number available for every company. Whether it�� a very good number or not depends on the assumptions the method uses.

Walmart Stores (WMT) built its reputation on everyday low prices and convenient supercenters that allow customers to do all their shopping in one place. But revenue at established Walmart stores in the U.S., which account for 60 percent of the company's total sales, has declined for five consecutive quarters. Meanwhile, the number of customers has fallen six quarters in a row. Like many other retail chains that cater to working-class Americans, Walmart is a victim of an uneven economic recovery that has benefited well-heeled shoppers more than those in the lower-income rungs. Moreover, shoppers are no longer willing to spend hours in big supercenters. They're turning to online competitors such as Amazon.com (AMZN), dollar stores and pharmacies. Walmart's annual shareholders' meeting Friday could offer clues as to how Doug McMillon, who became Walmart's CEO in February, plans to deal with the biggest issues Walmart faces: Cash-Strapped Shoppers In an interview with The Associated Press, Bill Simon, CEO and president of Walmart's U.S. stores division, says the top concerns among its shoppers are lack of jobs and gas prices.     3. Dollar store drama and coffee surge: Shares in Dollar General (DG) are down more than 7% after CEO Rick Dreiling announced that he was retiring in 2015. Activist investor Carl Icahn has a 9.4% stake in Family Dollar (FDO), which many suspect he wants to merge with Dollar General. Family Dollar stock is down 2%. Related company Dollar Tree (DLTR) is slightly negative as well.

    Dollar General Corp. (NYSE: DG) is a store that most Goldman Sachs clients would never visit. Still money is money, and this call echoes our own belief that the dollar store theme is a secular winner for investors. Goldman Sachs raised the king of dollar stores to the Conviction Buy List on Friday, December 6. Unlike others where there was already a Buy rating, this one was raised up from a Neutral rating. The firm also raised its price target to $71 from $64, and the consensus price target is closer to $64, while the highest analyst price target is only $1 higher than the Goldman Sachs target.

    Despite the announcement that it was being sued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over its use of criminal background checks prior to, or during, their employment history, Dollar General (NYSE: DG  ) still managed to tack on 2.6% on the day. I feel this move has a lot to do with the prospect that global growth will continue to slow as dictated by investors' disappointment with Japan. A slower growth environment often favors discount retailers like Dollar General because consumers will attempt to stretch shrinking incomes even further in its stores. The next couple of quarters will certainly be telltale as to where Dollar General heads next.
