Top Bank Companies To Buy For 2014

Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: APC  ) has been one of the best-performing large energy stocks this year, with shares up nearly 30% year to date. The company's outperformance is due largely to a favorable settlement of the Tronox case, in which Anadarko was required to pay a much lower-than-expected penalty for environmental liabilities.

But despite the significant uplift in Anadarko's valuation, I think the company may still be reasonably undervalued. Given its exceptional track record of deepwater success and massive opportunity in the Delaware Basin's Wolfcamp shale -- one of the most promising new oil discoveries in America -- I think Anadarko shares deserve to command a premium valuation.

Barclays downgrade
Barclays recently downgraded Anadarko to Equal Weight from Overweight, citing valuation concerns, though the bank maintains a $111 price target on the stock. Barclays' analyst Thomas Driscoll explained that, despite Anadarko's strong asset portfolio and impressive track record, there is better value elsewhere in the energy sphere.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BKRKY) (Persero) Tbk PT, a leading commercial bank and microfinance lender in Indonesia, declined in the third quarter. Recent stock performance was largely attributable to a significant drop in the Indonesian Rupiah. While we believe the company's fundamentals and competitive position remain sound, the country suffered a larger than expected deterioration in its current account deficit, leading to a weaker currency and higher interest rates, which negatively impacted its local equity market. For investors looking for exposure to the US commonwealth of Puerto Rico, banking stocks Doral Financial Corp (NYSE: DRL), First Bancorp (NYSE: FBP), OFG Bancorp (NYSE: OFG) and Popular Inc (NASDAQ: BPOP) offer the best bet as these Puerto Rico stocks trade on major US exchanges rather than the OTC. However, it should be mentioned that there has been a slowdown in Puerto Rico economy which has also shrunk in five of the past seven fiscal years. Then lastFebruary, Puerto Rico debt was cut to speculative grade by the three largest credit-rating companies whileGovernor Alejandro Garcia Padilla has proposed a series of budget cuts to help tackle the island mounting debt load -including the freezing public workerssalaries and the closing about 100 schools.
